  1. Yes is not always the healthiest answer If you are under too much stress, you are more likely to feel run down and even get ill, so saying yes is more likely to put too much load on your bridge.

  2. Saying no doesn’t mean you are selfish It means that you are focusing on your existing commitments and that you want to devote more time to them and do them properly.

  3. Saying no means you can pursue new things Saying no to some things will free up some of your time to enable you to pursue new interests.

  4. Saying no allows other people to step up By saying no you are opening the door for others to benefit from taking the task on. Taking responsibility can lead to them not stepping up.

We know it is really hard to say no. We feel rude, we’d like to help and avoid any conflict. Saying no can be also worried us that we are missing out on an opportunity and be part of a group, conforming with them. But, when no is the appropriate response, it is important you learn to say it without guilt. So, say it with honesty and respect but being clear and brief, do not leave the door open for a change of mind. Also, you may find you have repeated your response several times for it to be accepted. Do not lose it up and be firm regarding it, do it for your health. Don’t be afraid to speak with your manager or colleagues when feeling overwhelmed or stuck in a situation you don’t like. If you don’t feel comfortable talking to someone in your organization you can always get outside help. You can find a lot of charities, organisations or groups that try to help workers get rid of stress.
